Essay Writing in IEEE format – Guide

To write, format, and cite a research paper and essays, IEEE citation and reference format are used. IEEE format is developed in the Chicago Manual Style. It is most commonly used by students related to computer science and any technical field. Most research papers and essays of computer science and technical disciplines are written in IEEE format. The students of these fields must know IEEE citation and reference style to get success.


A good essay writer must be aware of how to write an essay in IEEE format. The steps to write an essay in IEEE format as follows:





General Format


The general format in IEEE style is given below:

  • Top of the first page must consist of a title.

  • Below the title, there must be the name of the writer, his affiliation, and email address on separate lines.

  • The body must appear in two columns and a 10-point type should be used for the formatting of a paper.

  • Abstract and index terms must be the starting paper of a paper.

  • It must include a note to practitioners, appendices, nomenclature, and acknowledgment depending upon the context and field of the essay.

  • Primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary section headings must be used to divide the paper into different sections.

  • Tables, figures, and equations are all placed in the center of the table and are numbered sequentially.

Abstract


IEEE format requires an abstract to be added to the paper. It should appear in boldface type and must be followed by a title page. It should not include any mathematical equations and abbreviations and must be a concise one with 250 words. Point out new things in the abstract.


Section Headings


The IEEE format essay is divided into different sections which increases the readability of the essay.


Primary Headings: They are at the center above the texts. It must be in small caps. It must be numbered in roman numerals.


Secondary Headings: A-line break is used to separate it from the rest of the text. It must be in italics. It must be listed in capital letters.


Tertiary Headings: A colon is used to separate it from the rest of the text. It should also be written in italics and indented. These are numbered with Arabic numerals.


Quaternary Headings: Colon is used to separating it from the text and written in italics. These are left-aligned and indented. These are numbered by lowercase letters.


IEEE Citation


In IEEE citation, the in-text citation does not include the name of the author, page number, and publication date. A number in square brackets is used for the in-text citation. The basics of citation are as follows:

  • In the line of text, citations are placed in a bracket.

  • While citing in the essay, the source should be numbered. If you cite this source in the essay use the same number.

  • If there are multiple sources, mention each number separated by comma or dash in a bracket.


IEEE Bibliography


The list of sources that have been used in the essay is all mentioned in the bibliography at the end of the paper. All these references are in the same sequence as they have been used in the essay.

  • It is titled as references, can be centered or aligned left at the top of the paper.

  • Each reference must be in hanging indent while the bracketed numbers are written on the left side of the page.

  • The last name of the author is written as the first initial.

  • The name of any journal or book must be written in italics.

  • The quotation mark is used to list the title.
